Warden Message
January 29, 2010

This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens to the latest information regarding human cases of H1N1 Influenza, sometimes incorrectly known as swine flu.  Both the states of Sonora and Sinaloa report that H1N1 is present in the population.  State authorities are monitoring reports of illness.  American citizens traveling or residing in Sonora and Sinaloa can receive this vaccine free of charge from public health venues throughout each state.  Both Sonora and Sinaloa recommend that pregnant women get the vaccine in their second or third trimester.  Please visit http://hermosillo.usconsulate.gov for detailed information about these locations in the States of Sonora and Sinaloa.  Both states have reported that current demand for the vaccine is low, although rationing by age and other criterion may be implemented if demand increases.

Any questions or concerns about influenza or other illnesses should be directed to a medical professional.  Although the U.S. Consulate General in Hermosillo cannot provide medical advice or provide medical services to the public, a list of hospitals and doctors can be found at http://hermosillo.usconsulate.gov.

For more information on U.S. Government policy during a pandemic, and for travel safety information, please see the State Department's "Pandemic/Avian Influenza" and "Remain in Country" fact sheets on www.travel.state.gov.  Further information about 2009-H1N1 Influenza, including steps you can take to stay healthy, can be found at  the U.S. Centers for Disease Control website at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/, the U.S. Government pandemic influenza website at http://www.pandemicflu.gov, and the World Health Organization website at http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/index.html.

U.S. citizens may also call the Office of Overseas Citizens Services in the United States for the latest travel information.  The Office of Overseas Citizens Services can be reached from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, Monday through Friday, by calling 1-888-407-4747 from within the U.S. and Canada, or by calling (202) 501-4444 from other countries.

Americans living or traveling in Sonora and Sinaloa are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department's travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/ so that they can obtain updated information on travel and security within Mexico.  Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.  By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of emergency.

Warden Message
December 4, 2009

This warden message alerts American residents and travelers to seasonal crime along toll roads in Sonora and Sinaloa involving the theft at gun point of money, jewelry and other items of value visitors might bring to share with family members in Mexico.  While such crimes can happen at any time, there are seasonal peaks, occurring primarily during the period between late November and mid-January and again between mid-March and mid-April.

Please be aware of the following common scenario: Most cases occur at night or in the hours before dawn and involve two vehicles.  A car or truck with lights resembling those used on law enforcement vehicles pulls up behind the victim's car and motions the driver to pull to the side of the road or down a side road where the theives' second vehicle is waiting.  The victims are told at gun point to get out of their car.  One of the thieves guards them while the others remove valuables from the car.  Usually the thieves instruct the victims to wait for a period of time before trying to leave, and not to speak with police or law enforcement about the incident.  They usually leave the keys for the victim's car in a place where the driver can locate them easily.  Then the thieves depart, and the occupants of the car can resume their journey.  To date, no one has been seriously injured or killed during these robberies, but the experience can be traumatic and terrifying.

It does not appear that these criminals are targeting American cars or American citizens.  The best defense against this type of assault is to DRIVE ONLY DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS.

Please report any crimes of this nature to police authorities and call the consulate nearest your location.  You can reach U.S. Consulate General Hermosillo by calling 662 289 3500 during the day or after hours by calling cell phone 662 256 0741.  We are located at Monterrey 141 Poinente, Col. Esqueda, Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.  The U.S. Consular Agency in Mazatlan is located at Playa Gaviotas 202, Local 10. Zona Dorada, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico.  Their numbers are 669 916 5589 during the day and cell number 669 918 0303 after hours.
