A child born to a U.S. citizen is likely to be a U.S. citizen as well. Parents of U.S. citizen children born abroad are urged to obtain a consular Report of Birth which will serve later as evidence of the child's citizenship for school, work, or other purposes. Please call (662) 289-3500 extension 3595 in order to schedule an interview and to confirm the documents needed for the appointment. Both parents must appear with the child. The following evidence is required for a Report of Birth: - Print and complete the Application for Consular Report of Birth (DS-2029)
- Original or certified copy of the child's Mexican birth certificate
Proof of the parents’ identity and citizenship, such as a passport, birth certificate, certificate of citizenship, certificate of naturalization, and photo ID.
- If only one parent is a U.S. citizen, proof that the parent has been in the United States for five years prior to the birth of the child (two after age 14). Examples of such evidence are tax returns, mail, school documents, and dated photographs.
- School records if the child is over 12 years old
- Original or certified copy of the parents’ marriage certificate. If applicable, original or certified proof of the termination of any previous marriage.
- Hospital/attending physicians statement providing information on child's birth, as well as hospital bills, account statements, etc.
