REPORTING OF BIRTH ABROAD

A child born to a U.S. citizen is likely to be a U.S. citizen as well. Parents of U.S. citizen children born abroad are urged to obtain a consular Report of Birth which will serve later as evidence of the child's citizenship for school, work, or other purposes.

NOTE:
Even though both parents may be U.S. citizens, a child born in Mexico is also a Mexican citizen through birth in Mexico and may be required to enter and leave Mexico with a Mexican passport.
